EWB-NY Education committee is excited to bring you news of upcoming volunteer opportunities:
Bridges & The World Science Festival
Saturday, June 2nd, 10am – 6pm
Brooklyn Bridge Park
Do you love bridges? The World Science Festival is seeking 2-3 engineers in the tri-state area to talk to youth and family audiences on Saturday, June 2nd, about the engineering basics of the Brooklyn Bridge, and bridges in general. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you are available to participate and spend a lovely summer day teaching about one of New York’s most iconic landmarks, the Brooklyn Bridge.
The World Science Festival is being held in various venues throughout the NYC area from May 30th – June 3rd. Check out the website above for more information on other Festival events.
The Salvadori Center Annual Design Charrette
Friday, June 8th, 8:30am – 3:30pm (Light breakfast & lunch provided)
The Winter Garden – World Financial Center, 200 Liberty Street, NYC
Each year, the Salvadori Center hosts a Design Charrette for about 100 New York City grade school students. This year, the students will design large scale, modular skyscrapers. Groups of 5 students will be teamed with 2 volunteers to help students design and build their projects. We end the day with a celebration of the students’ work, which includes a brief presentation of each group’s design.
As a volunteer, all you need is patience with children and the willingness to share your expertise or help them to realize their projects. Because of the nature of the work – working together as a team and completing a project within a deadline – it’s important that volunteers stay for the entire event (8:30 am until 3:30 pm). In addition to the personally rewarding experience of volunteering and helping young students, you will receive a cool Salvadori Center hat to commemorate the experience!
Please contact email@example.com if you are able to participate!
2012 Iridescent South Bronx Engineering Summer Camp
July 23–August 17, 9am–4pm daily
Iridescent Science Studio—890 Garrison Ave, Bronx NY 10474
This summer, Iridescent is seeking engineers to mentor high school students as they explore science, technology, engineering, and design in an interactive, hands-on manner—and to invent and build new things! Students will work with mentors and camp supervisors to plan, design, and build a solar powered ice cream cart, to improve energy efficiency and reduce operating costs for local ice cream vendors in Hunts Point, one of the poorest sections of the Bronx.
How can you participate?
Volunteer for a day
- Stop by the Iridescent Science Studio if you have a weekday free
- Help Iridescent plan the camp from July 9th thru the 23rd
- Visit the Studio during camp to speak to students about your love of engineering, a cool project you’re working on, or to help students build their projects
Be a TEAM MENTOR
- Mentor a highschool team as they plan, design, problem solve, and build the project
- Pre-Camp – meet with your team ONE weekday/weekend day, from July 9-23
- During Camp – meet with your team once per week to mentor and guide the process, July 23 through August 17 (5 meetings).
- At least ONE of these weekly meetings during the camp must be in person, but the others could be via Skype or videoconference.
Bring your engineering expertise – electrical, mechanical, civil or just a knack for tinkering with gadgets – and have some fun in the South Bronx this summer! Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you are able to participate in this exciting opportunity!
